Sound on the Wall: Lines and Melodies of Dunhuang
This concert draws inspiration from the Dunhuang murals, transforming the vibrant scenes of paradise, the gestures and flowing robes of bodhisattvas into a symphony of colours and lines. The new composition incorporates ancient musical elements and instruments, reimagining melodies and rhythms with contemporary vocabulary, bringing silent images to life on stage.
The timbre navigates between solemnity and gentleness: the structured nature of the Tang Dynasty court translates into harmonic layers, while the gesture of plucking a flower and the mudra of fearlessness become pulsating beats, and the flowing clouds and flying figures stretch into melodic lines. When the paintings transform into music, paradise no longer feels distant, resonating with the present in every breath.
The performance lasts approximately 1 hour, with no intermission.
